Marble Magnets - Teacher Appreciation Week

It's teacher appreciation week! Time to let your kid's teacher know that you appreciate them! So what to do? What to get? What to make?

My kiddo was no help:

Me: "Does she drink coffee?"
K: "I don't know."

Me: "What's her favorite color?"

K: "I don't know."

Me: "What does she like to do?"

K: "I don't know."

Great.

I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to try making some marble magnets - they've been on my to-do list for some time. There are a lot of tutorials on how to make them but I used the one on
Not Martha (clever blog title don't you think?)

For my first attempt I'm happy with the way they turned out!
It was super easy to do, inexpensive, took very little time and required only a few supplies (magnets, silicone glue, flat marbles and decorative paper.) I kept thinking of more words to use but decided to stop at twelve.

I'll definitely make these again....but tweak a few things like the font that I used, the size, etc. We are putting the marbles on a magnetic dry erase board and wrapping it up. Next time I'll put them in an empty Altoids tin, or better yet a tin with a clear window on top? Has anyone seen these and/or know where to get them?
(Update: I found some at Oriental Trading Company)

Hope Kailani's teacher likes it!

  1. Cool! I've always wanted to try making those to. I am going a bit batty in the no craft zone. Looks harmless enough. Might have to jet out to Michael's for a little craft therapy!

  5. I want to make some of my daughter's teacher but I can only find small marbles.. where did you get yours? I have 3/4" magnets and need marbles big enough to cover up the magnets!

  6. Angela, I found the marbles at a place here called "Flora Dec" which is a huge floral decorating/craft store. They had two different sized marbles. It's the only place I found the larger marbles! If you have a hard time maybe you can find smaller magnets? GOOD LUCK! :)

  7. Thanks. I ended up finding some larger ones at Michaels but they were mixed in with blue and green ones.. I talked to a Michaels employee about my predicament and how I didn't want to buy 4 bags of mixed just to get enough clear, and she opened the packages, got enough clear ones from other bags and replaced those with the green and blue ones, so I only had to buy one! I REALLY lucked out there, and I'm pretty sure it is against the rules, but I'm not complaining :) We used photos of her teacher's favorite things and reminders of things they did in class (pics of book characters and such) and they were a HUGE hit, her teacher LOVED them!

  8. Angela - that is SO AWESOME of Michael's to do that! (Yeah - it probably was against the rules! Ha!) Did you take any pictures of the marbles? I love the idea of making them of the teacher's favorite things.....and of past projects! Happy it worked out for you! :)
